Tajikistan and Turkmenistan Reportedly Turn to India for Akash-1S Air Defence

September 20, 2026

India has exported its Akash-1S short-range air defence system to Tajikistan and Turkmenistan, according to the Telegram channel Kyrgyz Militarist, citing former Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) chief Dr Samir V. Kamat. The reported deals mark an expansion of India’s defence exports into Central Asia, where both countries have traditionally relied on Russian-made systems.

The Akash-1S was developed by DRDO and is produced by Bharat Dynamics Limited. The system can engage targets at ranges of up to 25 km and altitudes of up to 18 km. It is designed to intercept aircraft, helicopters, drones and cruise missiles.

The reported exports were described by AviationSpace in July as strategically significant. The outlet said the deals could diversify the defence procurement of Tajikistan and Turkmenistan while increasing India’s role as a defence supplier in the region.

Organiser.org reported that both countries had shown interest in the Akash-1S following Armenia’s purchase of the system in 2024. Armenia became the first international buyer of the Indian air defence system, and its reported successful induction has encouraged interest from other countries.

The two Central Asian states have traditionally operated Russian air defence systems, including the S-125, Kub and Buk. Tajikistan also hosts Russia’s 201st military base and faces security challenges linked to neighbouring Afghanistan. Turkmenistan, meanwhile, is seeking to strengthen its air defence capabilities amid evolving security threats.

The reported deals would further expand India’s defence export programme and strengthen the country’s presence in the Central Asian defence market.
