Emerging Anti-Taliban Front Claims Brief Takeover of District in Northeast Afghanistan

July 20, 2026

A newly emerged anti-Taliban armed group briefly seized the district headquarters of Yaftal in Afghanistan’s northeastern Badakhshan province after launching an overnight attack on 16–17 July, according to multiple Afghan media outlets. The Taliban confirmed the assault, saying security forces regained control within hours and detained most of the attackers. The incident comes as another recently formed opposition movement, the Afghanistan Republican Front (ARF), has also stepped up claimed attacks against Taliban targets.

According to local sources cited by Aamaj News, the group, identified as the Guardians’ Front, claimed responsibility for the attack. Fighters reportedly entered the district headquarters, raised their flag, disarmed Taliban personnel and seized a large quantity of weapons before withdrawing. Afghanistan International, Zawia News and Hash-e Sobh also reported that the district remained under the group’s control for several hours, while helicopters later patrolled the area.

Little is known about the Guardians’ Front, which has no confirmed social media presence or official website. Reports say it is led by former National Resistance Front (NRF) commander Abdul Qayum Malang, a native of Yaftal District and a former member of Afghanistan’s special forces. The attack is believed to have taken advantage of long-standing local tensions in Badakhshan, including disputes over ethnic representation, gold mine revenues and the destruction of opium poppy fields, as well as an alleged rift within the Taliban’s local leadership.

The Taliban said senior district officials were on leave during the attack and that security forces responded within hours, arresting several participants while continuing operations to locate others. Taliban Army Chief of Staff Qari Mohammad Fasihuddin Fitrat later visited the district, stating that the attack had been neutralized and that most of the attackers had been captured.

The incident coincides with increased activity by the Afghanistan Republican Front (ARF), another recently established anti-Taliban group. Over the past week, the ARF claimed responsibility for three attacks targeting Taliban personnel and facilities in Parwan and Bamiyan provinces, including an ambush on intelligence personnel, a rocket strike on an ammunition depot and a raid on a Taliban checkpoint. Since announcing its formation in late 2025, the ARF has also claimed operations in Kabul, Badakhshan, Baghlan, Takhar and Ghor, although its claims have not been independently verified and the Taliban have not commented on its reported attacks.

The emergence of both the Guardians’ Front and the ARF points to a broader expansion of Afghanistan’s non-jihadist armed opposition. While both groups remain relatively opaque, their increasing operational tempo and widening geographic reach suggest that armed resistance to Taliban rule may become more fragmented and active across several regions of the country.
